Located on Church Street, by the foot of the world-famous 199 steps is W Hamond Jewellers (est. 1860), the oldest manufacturers and retailers of Whitby Jet Jewellery and ornaments in the world. Over the years W Hamond has acquired an unrivalled collection of antique Whitby jet as well as the largest specimen of rough jet, which led to the decision of opening a specially dedicated Museum on the same street, sharing with the world information on the geology, history and legacy of Yorkshire's famous gemstone.
The Museum of Whitby Jet is housed in the former iconic Wesley Hall which was acquired in 2015. An enormous restoration project was taken on, for which the Wesley Hall has now been lovingly restored to its former glory, reviving where possible Wesley's original pieces. The Museum plays a major part in the future education, understanding and the advancement of this world-famous, well-loved gemstone.
