The first Visit Whitby website promoting Whitby to its many tourism visitors was created in 1997 by Bill Baker. Bill, who was born in London, was a founding member of Whitby and District Tourism Association (WDTA) and was its treasurer since its formation in 1997 right up until last year.
Bill’s forward thinking meant that the WDTA was of the first associations in the country to have a website.
He and his wife Alison ran the Haven Crest Hotel in Upgang Lane for many years. He was extremely proud to be made an honorary citizen of Whitby in recognition of his work for the town.
Harry Collett, chairman of WDTA said “Mr Baker did an incredible amount for the town and will be sorely missed as both a member and friend”.
