Dark Skies – Inspired Jewellery
10 February @ 10:00 am - 16 April @ 5:00 pm
Fabulous wearable art by jewellers Jackie Selcraig, Liz Samways and Jenny Weston.
Jackie Selcraig is the designer/maker behind the Gracie J jewellery range. She works from her home-based studio in the Scottish Borders and uses the incredible landscape which surrounds her, both by day and by night, as her inspiration.
Jenny Weston was born and bred in North Yorkshire, studied art in Harrogate and travelled around the world before settling back down on the Yorkshire coast. She started making jewellery as a small child – prising open jump rings with her fingernails and inserting plastic toys embellished with glitter nail varnish.
Jenny now makes jewellery using precious and semi-precious gem stones and pearls. She loves jewellery from ancient civilisations, such as Egypt, Rome and Native America. She particularly enjoys the textures of keshi, biwa and nugget pearls and likes using the variety of colours offered by the oceans of the world. She often knots pearls and gemstones onto cord, letting the beauty of the materials speak for themselves, and also manipulates wire to build form and structure to hold a jewel.
Liz Samways works in etched, engraved and enamelled silver and copper, along with other metals as the inspiration takes her. Sterling silver is combined with copper and brass, while on some pieces layers of vitreous enamel are used in a painterly way to add elements of colour.
