After six years organising the popular Spirit of the 40s weekend event in Whitby, the Whitby and District Tourism Association (WDTA) regret to announce that it will be unable to host another 40s event.
The cost of staging such an event has now become too expensive both in time and money for the organisation to sustain alone, despite its continuing popularity. Like many another community - run event, it has fallen victim to the increasing number of licences required by bureaucracy. The bewildering array of applications not only create more expense each succeeding year, but also demand more volunteer hours in processing these forms.
All the members donate their time to organise this event for the benefit of both residents and visitors, but there are no longer sufficient members who can volunteer the time required to do the event justice, given the daily demands of their individual tourism businesses. It was originally hoped that members of the community and other local organisations would contribute volunteer hours towards the event in promoting Whitby during the shoulder season, but this has not happened.
Furthermore, the cost of staging such an event is such that it needs additional support through match funding. Unfortunately, the funding applied for to help stage last year’s event has not, to date, materialised as promised. Without funding, it would be ill advised to continue with another event for 2011.
What funding the WDTA does possess will henceforth be devoted to the production of the highly acclaimed Whitby Guidebook. As an all-year-round promotional publication for visitors to Whitby and District, it is vital that this continues to provide comprehensive tourism information, for which it is justly popular both locally and regionally.
As the Spirit of the 40s event takes a year to organise, the WDTA feel that an announcement at this time is appropriate, given that there may hopefully be an individual or organisation within the community who may wish to take on the role of organising this event in the future.
