Landscapes for a Darker Summer, Inspired by… gallery

A major exhibition of striking new work from Peter Hicks who has a passion for the North York Moors and its changing beauty. This exhibition is inspired by the challenging weather of the dark summer of 2012, his work clearly depicting the moody and rich landscapes of the North York Moors. Peter works with a mixture of acrylics and mixed media. Your chance to meet the artist on Saturday 5 April (12.00 – 3.00) and on Wednesday 16 April there will be an Artist’s Lecture (2pm).

April Spring Steam Gala at North Yorkshire Moors Railway

Come along and enjoy a great steam-filled weekend at North Yorkshire Moors Railway and view our visiting engines and home fleet. Sales stands at the Steam Gala will include the Scarborough & District Railway Modellers, LNERCA & M&J Tongue Nurseries and the LMS Patriot Project. The Scarborough & District Railway Modellers will portray model displays in the Learning Centre at Pickering Station. Our second Steam Gala Weekend will be held on 2nd to 5th May.

Dracula: Die Laughing Play – Whitby Goth Festival Weekend

This Play will make history as this will be the first ever Play to be held at the Whitby Goth Festival Weekend. Written by Ed Waugh, a nationally and internationally produced Playwright, “Dracula: Die Laughing” is sure to be ‘fang-tastic’ fun and the Play is a spoof about Count Dracula being pursued by vampire hunters whilst hiding out at the Goth Weekend. “Dracula: Die Laughing” will be held on Saturday 26 April at 2pm and then 7pm. Scotch Corner Chapel Open Day

At Scotch Corner Chapel, near Oldstead, there’s a rare opportunity to see inside this amazing ‘hidden gem’. Have a talk to the relatives of sculptor and artist John Bunting who built this chapel. Parking is available at Sutton Bank National Park Visitor Centre (only 1.5 miles from the Chapel). The site of this chapel is where the Battle of Byland took place in 1322.

The Great Xhibition

Whitby Art Xhibitions and Richardson & Smith present The Great Xhibition which will be held at the West Cliff Saleroom, Silver Street, Whitby. Aiming to show there’s more to explore than the many wonderful images of the Abbey, beach huts, seagulls etc., Whitby Art Xhibitions (a group of local artists) are hosting their own ‘pop-up’ exhibition to showcase the wonderful arts scene and talents of artists in Whitby and the area and this Xhibition will reflect a cross between a Group Show and an Art Fair. The West Cliff Saleroom will be transformed into an art space offering cafe facilities with plenty of seating and to add to the atmosphere – relax with a hot drink, sit back and enjoy the music. Come along and meet some of the local artists and be inspired by their talented work.

Ironstone Line Dance Weekend

Held at the Whitby Pavilion, this annual, popular event is now in its 17th year. There are three daily workshops with qualified line dance choreographers and live music over three nights. Steve Mason runs the disco on mornings and evenings.
