More about Longhouse

Make sure you book early to stay at this gorgeous mid-19th century fisherman’s cottage which is situated in the heart of the pretty village of Staithes, only a short drive from the world-famous coastal resort of Whitby (around 11 miles away). The cottage has had many uses in its time: a fisherman’s cottage with boat store, a Sunday School, a Dame House, and now a holiday home.

Staithes village is a beautifully picturesque and delightful fishing port, which is steeped in history. Whitby’s most famous son Captain James Cook lived in Staithes for a short time and worked in the village shop before moving to Whitby to take up his apprenticeship. Staithes Beck is close to the cottage and adjoins a small harbour with fishing cobles, creating a colourful image that is renowned for attracting keen artists and photographers. The famous Staithes Group of artists lived and worked in the village in the late 1800s.

The quaint cobbled streets and passage-ways are a wonder to explore and there’s a gorgeous sandy beach close by for all to enjoy. Three public houses and a bistro for light lunches and evening dinners and a tea shop serving fresh crab sandwiches and lovely bakes gives plenty of choice, ensuring you won’t go hungry – nor need to go far if you want some time out from cooking!

This quaint, whitewashed cottage with its strongly contrasting red pantile roof has bags of charm and character, having traditional beamed ceilings and panelled walls. Recently renovated, the cottage is immaculately decorated and furnished to a very high standard.

On the Upper Floor – in the lounge the wood-burning stove adds to the ambience and cosiness, but there’s central heating throughout also. There are two comfy leather sofas and use of a flat screen TV, plus plenty of books, games and DVDs to enjoy; adjoining is the modern kitchen/diner which is highly equipped for a ‘home-from-home’. On this floor is a cosy, romantic double bedroom that includes an en suite bathroom (with corner bath).

The Lower Floor comprises a twin-bedded room where the beds can be pushed together to create a double or kept separate, which leads to an en suite shower room with washbasin and wc.

Both bedrooms include a TV/DVD player, high quality bed linen, towels and hair dryers.

Adjoining the cottage is a small, south-facing garden which has a table and chairs, allowing for complete relaxation and al fresco dining. Available also are two sun-loungers and a BBQ. Unusually for this village, there’s an integral locking garage which offers storage for either a small car, motorbikes or canoes.

Sorry – no smoking and no pets
