This attractive, traditional Yorkshire Inn lies nestled in a beautiful wooded area of the Esk Valley in the village of Egton Bridge in the North Yorkshire Moors.
Originally built in 1860, the inn has been carefully refurbished, maintaining many of the original features that give it its character and charm, and now offers comfortable en suite guest accommodation in a breath-taking setting. The 3 well furnished, comfortable en suite rooms include both family and double rooms and are equipped with TVs and tea and coffee making facilities.
A hearty Yorkshire breakfast is served up in the restaurant every morning, helping you to start your day off on the right foot.
The Postgate Inn is renowned for its quality food, drawing visitors from near and far to enjoy the superb selection of traditional Yorkshire and British cuisine, made using fresh, locally sourced fish, meat and vegetables and infused with a hint of modern European flair.
The menu offers an excellent range of dishes to suit all tastes and budgets, including homemade pate, served on a bed of mixed lettuce with homemade chutney and Melba toast, Yorkshire beef fillet baked in wholegrain mustard served on a port wine reduction with seared queen scallops and halibut fillet cooked in lime butter served on a tomato and tarragon mash veiled with brandy and crayfish butter cream sauce.
Meals are served either in the relaxing ambience of the restaurant or in the lively atmospheric bar. It was this combination of top quality food in a relaxed and friendly setting that won the Postgate Inn the Punch Taverns North and North East Regional Food Award in 2006.
Outside, the pleasant beer garden offers a quiet haven in which to relax and enjoy the sunshine and the stunning scenery of the North Yorkshire Moors countryside. It’s an ideal place to unwind after a long day’s hiking or sightseeing.
The inn has a warm, inviting atmosphere and is popular with locals and visitors alike, just as it is when featuring in ITV’s drama series Heartbeat, under its stage name of “The Black Dog”. The village of Goathland (Aidensfield in Heartbeat) is just a few miles away and Egton Station is serviced by the North Yorkshire Moors Railway, so you can explore Heartbeat Country by steam train.
The railway also provides easy access to Whitby for day trips exploring Yorkshire’s rugged and beautiful coastline, old Whitby town with its many unique shops and the impressive ruin of Whitby Abbey. Scarborough and Filey are also within easy reach.
In the evenings you can relax in the lounge by the period Victorian stove, or enjoy the entertainment in the bar, where regular special events are held, including blues nights, karaoke, and charity events.
