More about Cleveland Ironstone Mining Museum
A warm welcome awaits you at the Cleveland Ironstone Mining Museum at Skinningrove, near Whitby. This nationally important Museum offers visitors an authentic and exciting underground experience, with your very own tour guide, making your Museum visit more interesting, informative and entertaining.
This Museum is unique in the fact that it’s the only Museum located on the actual former site of an ironstone mine. Loftus Mine was the third largest in the Cleveland District and in its heyday employed over 500 men and boys, running from 1865 to 1958. Those miners made Cleveland the most important ironstone mining district in Victorian and Edwardian Britain. Skinningrove occupies a unique place in ironstone’s mining history.
The Tour starts with a short film, describing the origins and eventual decline of mining ironstone in Cleveland. The Museum Gallery showcases a very good selection of historic photographs, plans, original miners’ helmets, lamps and many other artefacts. There’s much more to see as you journey through the Museum.
